Although I like to complain (a lot) about the winters in Minnesota, I have to say it does have one definite redeeming quality.
When we first moved here I was astounded by how many people had "cabins"
(because the image that the word 'cabin' brought to my mind was far different than the houses they were referring to).

And also, constantly hearing about how much time these people spent "at the lake" during the summer was honestly kind of nauseating.
Flash forward 14 years.
That person is now me.
Almost 3 years ago we bought a "cabin" (or a 40 year old little house that just happens to be lakeside) 2 hours away on our favorite little lake in central Minnesota - a lake we'd been vacationing at for 4 years and had made wonderful memories on. We'd spend only one week there a year, but if you asked the girls where their favorite place to be was, "the lake" was always their answer.
And now that we literally have spent more than half of the past 3 summers there it's still (thankfully) their answer.

It is, far and away, our happy place.
It's small, but we don't mind. It's cozy and comfortable.
We have the best of times out on the lake.
We have lots of wild neighbors
(and I'm not talking about the dear little 80+ year old couple who lives next door).
...and the best place for Happy Hour.
Going for a cruise every night with a glass of wine to watch the sun set is my very favorite thing to do with my family.
And the sunsets are spectacular.
It is where out-of-state family and friends gather every summer to spend a fun weekend living the lake life.
It's a place where we relax and recharge during the school year when schedules are crazy. Finding a weekend to get up there often proves challenging, but when we can, it is a great escape.
And even in the winter, it's fun to run around on the frozen lake...
...enjoy a toasty bonfire...
...or build a hula dancing snowgirl.
It's where you can ride for hundreds of miles on a trail that runs right by our cabin...
or walk the 1.5 miles into the darling town for ice-cream and candy...
and the World's Best Pizza (we can agree to disagree - but on this blog it takes the prize).
It's a place where, if you stick around this blog long enough, you'll certainly hear me talk about...
because it is my very favorite place to be!

ahhh-I've always been intrigued with minnesota...this makes me even more curious. beautiful scenery and beautiful family!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you so much! And yes, MN is beautiful...from May - November! I'm a west-coast girl at heart so it's still hard, but summer days at the lake makes it a lot easier! Thanks for reading! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi! The lake is our happy place too! Being out on the boat, having some drinks and having somewhere where my two littles can look forward to going every summer is something I can't wait for! My two year old is already a "water rat" (I'm still not sure why thats the best way to describe it lol) and my 3 month old has already been out and passs out the whole time! (so, she loves it). Your post today about the changing seasons cracked me up!! I need to get as many lake trips in as I can, but then I'm ready for fall, pumpkin everything and sweaters. Skip winter...back to the lake!

What a gorgeous family pic that is!! And the cabin looks amazing. When should I arrive??
ReplyDeleteUm. My favorite place to be in the world is on the dock of my cottage. Not near yours but mainly the same. And in June 1993, I think we were wearing the same dress. Just in case I don't get back here, Happy 20th! Sigh. I think you might be my long lost twin. :)
